The First Street Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of paintings by contemporary artist Joseph D’Esposito on April 27th. The show continues through May 22nd.

The thirteen paintings describe and analyze today’s world: the objects of everyday life and our physical environment. D’Esposito deals in recognizable objects that he has painted in a loosely gestural style. His objects are old tools, candy bar wrappings, ink bottles, an electric cord, bronze and gold statues of cherubs, an old telephone and typewriter. D’Esposito’s art immerses viewers into the magic by which paint transforms itself into things being described and back again.

Robert Long writing in the East Hampton Star, reviewing an exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum characterized his work by remarking that “he wishes he saw more paintings that can hold the viewers interest like this.” Eileen Watkins from the Star Ledger describes his still life of a typewriter as a “domestic subject.”

Formerly known for his cityscapes and comic book paintings D’Esposito moves away from them in his current exhibition towards an unexpected look at objects. The freshness, liveliness, confidence, energy , painterly light in his work gives us an automatic connection with the subject. Like the way a big oversized phone sits on a red hot satin drape. Silent but alive.

Mr. D’Esposito has exhibited extensively on the East Coast in such venues as The Parrish Art Museum, Southhampton, NY; National Academy of Design, NYC; Broome Street Gallery,NYC; and the Bowery Gallery,NYC. Also The Museum of the City of New York,NYC; Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay Oregan; Uni Bank,NYC; Cineric Inc, NYC; are just some of the collections that Mr. D’Esposito’s paintings are now in.

A reception for the artist will be held Saturday May 1 from 3 to 5 PM.. Gallery hours are 11 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday through Saturday.
