First Street Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and drawings by New York artist Wayne Fields. This is Mr. Fields' first solo show at the First Street Gallery.
Beautiful View primarily references the landscape: in particular the great open vistas of New York City and its bridges and surrounding waters. The artist has developed composite views juxtaposing the strong structural elements of the city's bridges against Manhattan island, its skyline, the sunset or the lost twin towers of the World Trade Center. As composites that move beyond naturalistic color, these abstracted images are decidedly not specific, but instead make painterly and symbolic statements about how one might remember New York's open spaces.
While some of the works here memorialize the twin towers, most are dominated by the bridge motif, perhaps symbolizing a passage to another place, whether better or worse, but also honoring and commemorating these public amenities in an increasingly privatized and crowded city.
The exhibition runs from January 30 through February 24, 2007. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, from 3pm to 6pm.
