Mark Gotbaum
The 'Pictures Generation' Show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier this year had a
profound effect on me as it clarified issues I had been working on independently, such as
how the media defines us and how we define our own reality.
My paintings make use of appropriated and found images, some iconic and some personal.
Working from life is very important to me. It is this direct perception of reality which is not
informed by popular culture that allows me to explore how images define and shape our ideas
